THIS WEEK'S QUICK READ TOPIC

Grease... Which One, Boss?

Do your maintenance people get the right grease to the right component every time?

Here are 3 grease types with their inherent properties. Armed with this information, one can quickly narrow down what grease goes where:

Wheel Bearing Grease - is recommended for use in plain bearings where high pressures or heavy shock loads are encountered. It is also recommended for use in anti-friction bearings subjected to high pressure or heavy shock loads where application is frequent and regular.

The oil in wheel bearing grease has high flash and fire points and yet has a very low pour point of -150F. The grease is formulated to meet the needs of bearings under both wet and dry conditions in the temperature range of -150F. up to 3000F. at moderate loads and speeds.

Wheel bearing grease also contains outstanding oxidation inhibitors, which gives it exceptionally long service life without structural change, resists water wash out, and provides protection against rust and corrosion.

Moly High Temperature Grease - Ordinary grease (which is without "moly") is formulated to lubricate a specific piece of equipment in which it is used. Under certain conditions, however, the equipment load becomes such that no liquid or semi-fluid lubricant can maintain a film between the metal components. When this occurs, "moly" comes into play, keeping metal-to-metal contact to a minimum with a film of "moly" particles rubbing against each other.

Higher quality Moly greases contains 3% molybdenum disulfide. Moly grease provides added protection, reduces fiction and resists moisture and most of all can withstand extreme pressures. Moly Hi-Temp never melts, as do many so-called high temperature greases. As temperatures become excessive, the oil in the outside layers of Moly Hi-Temp tends to volatilize, leaving the molybdenum disulfide to lubricate. Under conditions of high temperatures, periodic flushing with Moly Hi-Temp helps keep bearings in "perfect health."

Exposed Gear Grease - For a grease to meet the stringent requirements of an open gear lubricant, it must prolong the life of gears operating under exposed environmental conditions.

Inherent in an open gear, lubricant should have the ability to adhere to metal surfaces between the gear teeth; therefore, it must have good adhesive and cohesive properties too. A product, which is too cohesive, will "ball up" and not adhere, while one, which is too adhesive, will be difficult to apply.

There are many quality greases that meet these requirements, be sure to pick one that is always available to you and your application of need. Make sure the grease contains tackiness and cushioning agents, resists moisture, has an optimum temperature range, and provides anti-wear protection.
